I think it's time to update the list of nonwords that people pronounce so badly, you know they have no idea how they are actually spelled. This is because I got this email from Library Squirrel:
"This morning, I was at a meeting with a woman who makes way more money than I do, who kept using the word 'half-hazard' when she meant 'haphazard'. It was very distracting.
I kept thinking how good it would be in your list."
Then I heard someone use the non-word "high-bred" (hybrid). As in, "I want one of those new high-bred vehicles."
It's not going to go away, is it?

This just in:
"Tuesday, 7-9pm: Italian Conversation Night - Speak Italian with ex-patriots as well as Italian speaking Portlanders!"
I like to think of myself as a patriate.
Also, I don't know anyone personally who can speak Portlanders. Isn't it linguistically related to Starbuck?
Oh, I keep forgetting to post the awful one I hear all the time: "nuptuals" (nuptials). And since I frequently see it misspelled this way, I can actually *hear* the misplaced "u" when it's pronouced!
This, of course, goes along with the whole "everything ends in 'ual'" cutesy misspelling or word-conflation that I associate with shopping malls, for some reason.
"Escentual" oils, for example.
It must have something to do with Nederlanders, but I don't know which Italian they're talking about.
Maybe someone who no longer has even a shred of loyalty to Italy, but once did.
Also just saw a PDA on eBay that included a "stylist." That might come in handy.
