Still trying to figure out how to record (or even just hear) spoken word via my Dell. I want to converse with Argotnaut in Germany, and record some relaxation sessions for clients, and...some vowel research thing Argot is doing.

I downloaded the trial version of Audio Record Wizard, which looks like a nifty application, and it appears to be working, yet...nothing happens. I can hear the computer's sounds through the headphones, but never anything through the mic.

My ignorance is such that I am not even sure if I have a sound card. Is that standard? (Guess I could look that up in my specs, huh?)

Also, my computer's clock keeps resetting itself to an hour earlier for some reason.

Only seconds later .... !!!!

Now, I can RULE THE WORLD!!

As soon as I buy the licensed version, of course. (Only $24.95).

(Now I am free to create my "Human Imitations of Whale Songs for Lovers" CD.)

Neat--it does wav files, too.
Anyone know which is better for recording stuff to CDs?

I think the quality will be better with the .wav files but .mp3 will be smaller.

Try a few test recordings first... I think the loss of quality due to the compression probably won't be noticable.

You can fit quite a lot of audio in .wav format on a CD though.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks.

(Of course, I'm more concerned with loss of quality due to my own ineptness and blowing on the microphone.)

*****Audacity***** is free and very simple to use. Open program, press record button to record, press stop button to stop, etc.

There's also freeware at http://www.digitalsoundplanet.com/ if you want to get more involved with MIDI and stuff, but I suspect not right now!

But I'm already recording things with this one that I bought...and it's ridiculously simple. (I just didn't have the mic plugged all the way in---duh.)

Don't give me any *more* choices--it's like the nightmarish toothpaste aisle at Meijer!

Nice evil laugh. I need to work on mine. I have to do it early in the morning though, otherwise people will avoid coming to the library.

It's also a good way to end a therapy session early.

Oh, you _already_ bought it. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Well, I tried the trial version and liked it, so...
